Chief Justice Cheri Beasley appointed Judge Phyllis M. Gorham as acting senior resident superior court judge for Judicial District 13B covering Brunswick County, effective March 16, 2020. Judge Gorham will serve in this capacity until the vacant superior court judgeship for Judicial District 13B is filled by Governor Roy Cooper.
“As our Judicial Branch works to meet the needs of North Carolina’s residents while reducing the impact of COVID-19, it is imperative that each judicial district have the leadership and guidance provided by a senior resident superior court judge. I am grateful to Judge Gorham for her willingness to take on this additional responsibility and know that her wisdom and experience will benefit Brunswick County as it has Pender and New Hanover counties since 2007,” said Chief Justice Beasley.
Judge Gorham received her B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983, and her J.D. from North Carolina Central School of Law in 1990. Judge Gorham became a district court judge in 2005, and in 2007, Gorham was appointed to the superior court bench in Judicial District 5 covering New Hanover and Pender counties. In 2016, she was elected to serve in that position for an eight-year term.
