Chief Justice Paul Newby has proclaimed May 2026 as Recovery Court Month for the North Carolina Judicial Branch. During this month, recovery courts across North Carolina will join similar programs nationwide in recognizing National Treatment Court Month.
“For more than 30 years, recovery courts in North Carolina have helped individuals rebuild their lives and strengthen our communities,” said Chief Justice Paul Newby. “This month, we recognize that impact and the dedicated professionals who help make recovery possible.”
National Treatment Court Month is coordinated by All Rise (formerly the National Association of Drug Court Professionals). Recovery courts nationwide use this time to highlight the importance of continued federal and state support for these proven, evidence-based programs.
There are now more than 4,200 recovery courts across the United States, serving over 150,000 participants each year. Since their inception in 1989, these programs have served more than 1.5 million individuals and saved billions in taxpayer dollars.
In North Carolina, more than 80 recovery courts are currently operating across dozens of counties, providing critical treatment, accountability, and support services to individuals struggling with substance use and mental health disorders.
