“Marriages establish and implicate numerous rights and legal obligations (e.g., military deployments, social security benefits, pensions, workers’ compensation benefits, and disability benefits). The date of marriage may impact these rights and legal obligations. It is therefore essential that individuals continue to have access to the performance of marriage ceremonies during this time.” – Cheri Beasley, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (Emergency Directive 8 issued on April 16, 2020)

Effective Friday, May 1, 2020, marriage ceremonies will resume at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse on Mondays and Fridays by appointment only, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. (noon). The Mecklenburg County Courthouse is located at 832 East Fourth Street Charlotte, North Carolina 28202.

A total of six (6) appointments will be offered on the respective days, allocating a 30-minute session per appointment. Appointments shall be made by email only and will be confirmed via email. No phone calls regarding marriage ceremonies will be accepted. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the total wedding party shall be limited to four (4) people—the candidates for marriage and their two witnesses. No other guests will be allowed to enter the courthouse. To schedule your marriage appointment, please email Mecklenburg.Magistrate.Weddings@nccourts.org.

The restrictions on marriage ceremonies will be in place until June 1, 2020, and may be extended, in whole or in part, if deemed necessary.
